And they lived happily ever after! A very charming piece of ceramics by Alice Mackler, 2014.

Mackler is a most interesting artist who began to win recognition as a sculptor only after the age of eighty, when a solo exhibition of her work was held in New York in 2013\. Mackler died in Brooklyn in 2024, aged 92.

I came across this work in the description of more than seventy works of contemporary and modernist art donated to the Zimmerli Art Museum at Rutgers University by the museum's longstanding benefactors, Ann and Arthur Goldstein.

The gift includes a mixed-media work by Nicole Eisenman, works by Lee Friedlander from the 1960s, a self-portrait by the DJ and poet Juliana Huxtable and a customised skateboard by Darren Bader. The Goldsteins have now given the university more than a hundred and sixty works, among them pieces by Cindy Sherman, Robert Rauschenberg and Annie Leibovitz
