“…And in this present year of 746, in Cheese Week, on the Monday, he, Gavrila, went to the Foreign Quarter, to the market called Ladoga, and at that market he, Gavrila, fell in with the runaway soldiers Ivan, surnamed Stromynsky, and Savely… and the said Ivan and Savely invited him, Gavrila, to the Troitsa road to rob travellers, and he, Gavrila, went with them. And they, Gavrila and Savely, brought him, Gavrila, in the village of Pokrovskoye, in the parish of the church of Nicholas the Wonderworker, to a peasant, Grigory, whose son he knows not, who keeps a tavern and sells wine, and buying wine of him, Grigory, for money, they drank, and lodged with the said Grigory in his barn three nights, knowing full well that they were thieves. And from him, Grigory, he, Gavrila, with the said Ivan Stromynsky and Savely, set out in Cheese Week, on the Thursday, for the Troitsa road to rob travellers. And on that road, beyond the village of Rostokino, having gone some three versts, they were awaited by the said Stromynsky's comrades, four men, whose names he knows not. And all of them, seven men, cut themselves cudgels in the forest with a knife. And in that same place, past them, there came driving from the Trinity Monastery a man who gave himself out to be Assessor Yakov Kirillov, son of Milyukov, with three men, in a single covered sledge drawn by three horses. And he, Gavrila, with the said comrades, fell upon the said Milyukov… And having beaten him, Milyukov, and the three men, they bound them to trees in the forest on that Troitsa road, and all seven men drove off on the said horses some two versts from him, Milyukov. And those comrades of his gave him, Gavrila, two griven of money, and twenty-three copecks in small silver, a silver sword-hilt and a folding knife, and let him, Gavrila, go to Moscow… And he, Gavrila, on the road knocked the silver hilt off the sword with a stick, and broke the blade in two and threw it in the field, into the snow.”

Such is the testimony of how, in February 1746, Gavrila Ryzhy went out on the Troitsa road to rob people. Later he confessed to the deed before the Investigation Office, gave up the other robbers, and helped to find and seize them.

In the end the whole gang was taken, eight men in all, among them runaway soldiers, a sailor (that is, a worker at the sailcloth manufactory in the village of Preobrazhenskoye), peasants from the neighbouring villages, and the keeper of a den, who had planned their robberies in the Foreign Quarter and went out by night onto the Troitsa road with cudgels to rob belated travellers. They attacked in a mob, took all belongings and money, even stripped the leather from carriages, removed the clothes and shoes from people, leaving them in their underlinen, and sometimes tied their victims to a tree.
