Hunt the slipper, or Find the Slipper: an old English game in which the “customer” must find a slipper, shoe, toy or present that the “cobblers” seated in a circle pass secretly to one another under their feet. One may not only pass the slipper along furtively but also pretend to pass it, in order to throw the seeker off the scent. It was a diversion beloved not only by children but by grown-ups too, for add a couple of bottles of wine to the naive pastime and the search becomes far more absorbing.

As for the quotation from Shakespeare, “Men are but children of a larger growth”, on the red curtain held up by the devil, it in fact belongs to John Dryden, who lived half a century after Shakespeare.
