The grandiose Model of the Grand Kremlin Palace, which gathered dust for 20 years in the storerooms of the Shchusev Museum of Architecture, is perhaps the most vivid testimony to Catherine II's sweeping idea of remodelling the ensemble of the Kremlin and Red Square. Alas, the plan was never destined to be realised, and the palace remained only a model, which for more than a hundred years delighted Muscovites in various museum spaces and pavilions. One might say it is one of the few creations of the great Russian architect Vasily Bazhenov to have come down to us unaltered and in perfect preservation. The model was made in the 1770s.
