The State Hermitage is to undertake a large-scale restoration of its buildings in the coming years. According to the museum's director, Mikhail Piotrovsky, the work will affect the Hermitage Theatre and the Menshikov Palace and will continue for several years. The plans include the restoration of façades, state rooms and historic parquet floors.

Particular difficulty, in the words of Deputy Director Sergei Makarov, is presented by the restoration of the interiors of the Menshikov Palace, where unique eighteenth-century Dutch tiles cover even the ceilings.
