The Dresden State Art Collections were hit by a cyberattack on 21 January 2026\. As a result, online services have stopped working: the web shop, ticket sales and visitor services. The museums remain open, the security systems are functioning, and tickets purchased before the attack remain valid. The police and the public prosecutor's office are investigating; it is not yet known who is behind it or when all digital services will be restored.

Despite the failure of the digital systems, the museums have remained open to the public, since the security networks and technical protection are working normally.

The management of the Kunstsammlungen Dresden has set up an internal crisis team to coordinate the restoration of its systems. IT specialists and digital forensics services have been brought in; they are working to deal with the consequences of the attack and to repair the systems.

Municipal bodies, including the Dresden Police Directorate and the Saxon State Criminal Police Office, are taking part in the investigation of the incident. The Dresden Public Prosecutor's Office is considering whether to open a formal investigation into the case.

The Dresden State Art Collections are a major museum association in Germany, comprising 15 museum institutions, among them such celebrated sites as the Green Vault in the Royal Palace, the Old Masters Picture Gallery in the Zwinger and the New Masters Gallery in the Albertinum.
