# Good Lord, how tired one is of Rothko and Klimt

The auction houses Christie’s and Sotheby’s have tallied up the year. Christie’s projected sales came to $6.2 billion, almost 7% more than last year. After a quiet first half, sales picked up considerably in the autumn. The most expensive lot of the year was Mark Rothko’s painting “No. 31 (Yellow Stripe)” from the collection of Ross Weiss, sold for $62.1 million.

Sotheby’s forecasts consolidated sales of $7 billion, 17% more than last year and the best result in the company’s history. Auction sales rose sharply in the second half of the year. The most expensive lot of the year was Gustav Klimt’s “Portrait of Elisabeth Lederer”, sold for $236.4 million.
