The Lord scatters the darkness of demons. "Paradise", the left panel of Hieronymus Bosch's triptych *The Last Judgement*, 1504.

From the bottom upwards we see the creation of Eve, the Fall, the expulsion of the first humans from Eden. And at the top: a battle between the servants of darkness and of light, watched by God.

In effect, this is an explanation of the two remaining panels of the triptych, the Last Judgement proper and "Hell". The root cause of all these horrors lies in the brightest and most joyful part. A reminder to no one to relax, for sin came into the world from Paradise itself.
