Looking at the poverty of the furnishings, it is hard to believe that this photograph shows the bedchamber of Marie Antoinette's private apartments on the ground floor of Versailles, overlooking the Marble Court. But it really is. The museum staff have decided to fill the room with authentic pieces only, which is why there is so little furniture for now: in time the interior will be supplemented with objects that once furnished the queen's rooms. Originally Marie Antoinette's bedchamber was considerably smaller: until 1785, when she received the green room, she demonstratively slept in the state bedchamber. So far Versailles has managed to buy a bedside table from the furnishings of Antoinette's apartments; the armchairs, canopy, carpets and other items have yet to be found in museum storerooms, auction catalogues and among private collectors
