The Colleoni family coat of arms is adorned with three pairs of testicles. The family is said to owe its emblem to one of its founders, Gisalberto Colleoni, who had a distinctive physiological peculiarity, a third testicle, which may have been the result of an orchitis he had suffered. Indeed, the surname itself can be spelt Coglioni, that is, "testicles". One member of the family, Bartolomeo Colleoni, immortalised the family arms on the monument to his beloved self in Venice, erecting it at his own expense. Triple testicles can also be found on the arms recorded on a tombstone in Bergamo Cathedral.
