The literatures of Italy, Austria and France are given 3 books each, Germany 4\. Ireland, Nigeria and, unexpectedly, Canada get 2 books apiece. One each for India, Colombia, Spain, Mexico, South Africa, Australia, Zimbabwe and South Korea. 26 of the authors are from the USA and 36 from Britain.

The earliest is from the 17th century: "Don Quixote", naturally. The 18th century is marked by Laurence Sterne. 26 books come from the 19th century, 62 from the 20th, and 10 from the 21st:

63\. "White Teeth" by Zadie Smith, 2000
73\. "Austerlitz" by Sebald, 2001
94\. "The Known World" by Edward P. Jones, 2003

51\. "My Brilliant Friend" by Elena Ferrante, 2011.

Ah yes, women are represented on the list by 26 writers with 39 books. The most popular, as is traditional, are Virginia Woolf, Jane Austen, Toni Morrison and the Brontë sisters.
