The fresco's original title is Cristo tra i Dottori, which often misleads viewers: many, in error, take Dottori literally as physicians. One should not forget that the word doctor derives from the Latin docere, "to teach", and a doctor is accordingly a teacher.

Jesus in this image is 12 years old. He has found himself in the Temple at Jerusalem, surrounded by learned men, and is conversing with them, astonishing the teachers with his understanding. It is the only episode from the life of Christ before his baptism described by the canonical evangelists.
