Francis I has issued a decree recognising a miracle wrought through the intercession of Pope John Paul I. This brings a Pope so adored by the people closer to canonisation. The process of beatification began in 2003, in 2017 Francis approved the canonisation of John Paul I, in 2021 his miracle was recognised, namely the healing of a gravely ill eleven-year-old girl at the very end of her life. It may be supposed that the final canonisation of John Paul I is not far off.

The pontificate of John Paul is called the September one: he was Pope for 33 days, one of the shortest papacies in history and the shortest since the 17th century. A defender of the poor, Albino Luciani came from a family of socialists and all his life was close to the people, to the poor and to working men, and was very severe in the economic affairs of church life.

The most widespread version of the sudden death of the still young Pope is poisoning. The conspiracy theory is bolstered by the fact that on the day of the Pope's inauguration Metropolitan Nikodim, head of the delegation of the Russian Orthodox Church, died suddenly; it is said that he may have been given by mistake a poisoned drink intended for the Pope.
