The Hermitage's Amsterdam branch is changing its name. From 1 September 2023, the city's third most important museum, after the Rijksmuseum and the Van Gogh Museum, will reopen as the H’Art Museum.

The Amsterdam museum dates back to 2004, when it began as a few rooms of the exhibition centre of a branch of the State Hermitage. In 2009 a full-fledged Hermitage branch opened in the Amstelhof building of 1683\. The opening was attended by the President of Russia, Dmitry Medvedev, and Queen Beatrix of the Netherlands. Since then the museum had existed as a outpost of the Russian Hermitage and, although it had no collection of its own, it staged a steady stream of exhibitions of Hermitage masterpieces. By joint efforts, 4,000 square metres were fitted out with everything needed for security and climate control, so that art of the highest order could be shown there. Part of the profits went to the Hermitage: about 1 euro from each ticket costing 15 euros.

In February 2022 the museum suspended its work. It has now been announced that it will change its name and its direction and will collaborate not with the Hermitage but with major museums in Paris, London and Washington.

In the first period after the break with Russia, the museum on the Amstel tried to lure the public with Vermeer's "Milkmaid", Pieter Bruegel the Elder's "Tower of Babel" and Rembrandt's last self-portrait. Then came the idea of ready-made exhibitions from foreign museums.

After so many months of idleness, the museum has announced cooperation with the Centre Pompidou in Paris, the British Museum in London and the Smithsonian in Washington. The British Museum specialises in antiquity and archaeology, the Centre Pompidou in contemporary art, the Smithsonian Institution in American art. Although these are the finest museum institutions in the world, replacing the Hermitage is, of course, impossible.

In the second half of 2024 an exhibition of Kandinsky from the collection of the Centre Pompidou, which is closed for renovation, will come to Amsterdam. In 2026 the British Museum will show the exhibition “Power of Women”. From Monday, a video installation by Martine Gutierrez from the Smithsonian can be seen on the Amstel.
