There is a film called “Sergei Kalmykov: A Man Visible from the Stars”. It is about an incredible Soviet artist and mystic who lived in Alma-Ata. Kalmykov moved to Kazakhstan in the late 1930s, when storm clouds began to gather over the circle of mystics, and in Alma-Ata he became a celebrity and a great favourite of the townspeople: striking, vivid, gifted, the artist wandered the streets and painted on scraps of paper, catching with astonishing ease the magical images of Kazakh nature and the enchantments of the East. Kalmykov might be walking through the bazaar, pull a piece of parchment from his canvas bag, paint a watermelon in an instant and give it to somebody. He worked a great deal in the theatre and left an enormous legacy, the fate of which is in places dark and unhappy, but of that I shall tell separately. Several of Sergei Kalmykov's works are on show at the exhibition at Garage, which closes in a few days. I adore him and was delighted to see him again.
