Even as a child, reading this book, I was struck that after the Battle of the Alma the Duke of Cambridge says: "Another such victory, and England will have no army", and on the very next page the death of Nicholas I is reported. True, five and a half months lay between the events, and Nicholas Pavlovich died of pneumonia, but an awkward analogy with an English hand in the affair suggested itself all the same. Forgive me, English readers, if you had nothing to do with it; this is only a children's book
