There will yet be accusations against the author from so-called patriots, who sit quietly in their corners occupied with wholly unrelated affairs, piling up little fortunes and arranging their own fate at the expense of others; but the moment something happens that they consider offensive to the fatherland, some book appears in which a bitter truth is at times spoken, they will run out from every corner, like spiders that have seen a fly tangled in the web, and suddenly raise a clamour: "But is it well to bring this into the light, to proclaim it? After all, everything described here, all of this is ours. Is that well done? And what will foreigners say? Is it pleasant to hear a bad opinion of oneself? Do they think it does not hurt? Do they think we are not patriots?"

Nikolai Vasilyevich Gogol, "Dead Souls". Volume 1, Chapter 11
