The image of the bird lady in the film "Home Alone 2" is, beyond doubt, a nod to a classic, and not only in idea and emotion but in quite exact visual correspondence with the original reference, the lonely bird woman of Pamela Travers's tale "Mary Poppins".

The makers of "Home Alone" could hardly have failed to draw inspiration from the bird woman of the 1964 screen adaptation of "Mary Poppins", a classic for the American viewer, which won 5 Academy Awards. Look closely and the character played by the Irish actress Brenda Fricker is even dressed like the bird woman as portrayed by the legendary Jane Darwell: the same palette, the same details, even the texture of the hat makes it plain that Kevin McCallister has met not merely a lonely woman but a teacher, one who can give him a lesson in kindness and in love for the world around him, all quite literally according to the text of "Mary Poppins".
