The exhibition of the Museum of the History of the Gulag makes a very powerful impression. It really is, perhaps, one of the best museums, in Moscow at least. Take, for example, the stand with pronouncements by the leaders of the Soviet state on repression and on the people.

Kirov, who urges that punishment be dealt out so that the increase in population would be noticeable in the next world.

Latsis, who urges that one not look in a case file for incriminating evidence, but settle the defendant's fate by the question of his origins.

Dzerzhinsky, who reminds us that we have more than enough space for building penal colonies.

It is sad that if you involuntarily compare these words with the quotations of present-day public figures, you realise that we have not come all that far.
