> I am the sum of everything that has ever happened to me, every mistake I have made and every tear I have shed, though I have tried to keep them few, and I have never repeated a mistake. After a catastrophe I take a deep breath, put on a smile and get on with something else. I say: “All right, I did wrong, but what have I learned? I shall never do that again.” But no experience of mine has made me bitter, and none ever will. I have seen what it does to far too many people. When you live with bitterness, it always shows in the face, and that is sad. The eyes lose their softness, the body stoops. Bitterness and self-pity are deadly poisons that cannot be hidden. They seem to seep into every pore. Thank God I never allowed myself time for either, and for that I am indebted to my natural way of looking at the world. I like it. I want to live in order to love and be loved, to give all that I can. And you cannot be generous if you are bitter.
