The Palace of Monplaisir was built to designs by Peter the Great. Whenever the Emperor came to Peterhof, he would usually stay here, in one of his favourite palaces. The interiors were adorned with Dutch tiles, wood carving, lacquer panels, stucco and painted ceilings. The floors of the galleries and the state hall were laid with black and white marble in a chessboard pattern.

During the Second World War almost all of the decoration was destroyed by fire. In the late 1970s the paintings were conserved.

Today Monplaisir is undergoing the first full-scale scholarly restoration in its history. The work began in December 2023 and, according to plan, will be completed by 2028.

The first stage includes the restoration of the paintings in the galleries and the central state hall, as well as the renewal of the stucco and the oak wall panelling. The restorers have already discovered four fragments of eighteenth-century painting hidden beneath later overpainting.
