Two Queens of England, the Queen Dowager Alexandra of Denmark (1844-1925), "darling Mama", as George V called her, and George V's consort Mary of Teck (1867-1953), out for a stroll. Alexandra of Denmark was widowed at the age of 66 and lived to 81\. The greatest difficulty in her relations with her daughter-in-law was her unwillingness to surrender her former position as first lady. The daughter-in-law, however, managed to come to terms with this and to preserve a friendly relationship with her domineering mother-in-law, founded on mutual respect, which a touch of egoism on the part of both ladies did nothing to disturb. George, for his part, had far less to put up with in a mother-in-law who got on his nerves: Mary of Cambridge died 4 years after her daughter's wedding.
