A great many works of art seized and stolen by the Nazis between 1933 and 1945 have still not been returned to their rightful owners and their heirs. According to a new report by the World Jewish Restitution Organization (WJRO), as many as 100,000 works originating from Jewish families may be held in museums in the United States.

The report states that most American museums do not provide sufficient information about the provenance of potentially looted objects, and that the closure last year of the online Nazi-Era Provenance Internet Portal has left researchers without a centralised source of data.

The countries taking part in the 1998 international conference on the restitution of art undertook to publish information about works confiscated by the Nazis and to create a centralised register. Some museums, including the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, and the Museum of Modern Art in New York, keep lists of objects with gaps in their provenance, but other major institutions, such as the Art Institute of Chicago, still do not publish such data.
