How does a fashion show differ from a war? In an army, not every detachment has a Yasmin Le Bon, generals are not obliged to embrace everyone after each manoeuvre, and operations are not conducted to the beat of rap and avant-garde music.

Many people's notions of the fashion world are formed, God forgive us, by films like *The Devil Wears Prada* and the series *Sex and the City*. This is rather sad.

How different is the universe of Edina Monsoon and Patsy Stone in *Absolutely Fabulous*. A show about two scatterbrained, self-absorbed and witty drunkards, ageless, with no sense in their heads and no attachments beyond a craving for the social whirl, parties and expensive things, does not date with the years and in some respects grows ever more topical.

Today marks 29 years since the show's premiere on the BBC: the first episode of *Absolutely Fabulous* aired on 12 November 1992\. If you are in doubt as to which is the most mindless, amusing and corrupting pastime for this weekend, I advise you to rewatch AbFab and recall what Barbara Bush looked like without her clothes, which brands Princess Anne wore, and where a crowd of skeletons with Jacqueline Kennedy hairdos was rushing off to.
