A photograph of 1910: the old man here is 80, and he will go on reigning for another 6 years and live to see the murder of his heir, Archduke Franz Ferdinand.

If you remember the novel «The Man Without Qualities», the preparations for the coming seventieth anniversary of Franz Joseph's reign, every bit as fine as those for the thirtieth anniversary of Wilhelm II of Germany, became one of its satirical lines. Yet the more recognisable image is that of Old Man Strollkin, as Franz Joseph was contemptuously called in Bohemia, which we learn from «The Good Soldier Švejk».
