Charlton Heston as the Spanish national hero and knight of the Reconquista Rodrigo Díaz de Vivar in the 1961 Spanish-American film "El Cid". Ximena, the beloved of El Cid, was played by Sophia Loren.

The film is distinguished by the high quality of its costumes, sets, historical detail and recreated atmosphere, which at last conjure up an image not of a dark and filthy Middle Ages but of a bright and beautiful era, albeit one with a complicated political situation.

Highly rated by critics, it is in essence not merely a handsome and majestic epic of courage, honour and personal responsibility, but also an action-packed adventure which may seem slightly wearisome today, yet meets every requirement of the genre, including the conflict between virtue and betrayal, here in the context of the struggle to liberate Europe from invaders, which in turn recalls the problems of our own day.
