The grand portrait of the Dauphins of France with the Marquise de Lansac. In 1638 Cardinal Richelieu filled every court office with his own creatures, and installed a relative of his as governess to the future king and the Duke of Orléans. The elderly woman beside the little boys is she, the 61-year-old Françoise de Lansac. I do not envy children with a nanny in epaulettes, of course. But in the year the portrait was finished, 1643, a far greater shock awaited them: the death of their father. As soon as Queen Anne became regent, she swiftly removed this creature of Richelieu's from the nursery
