Most of the festivities in honour of the wedding of Archduke Joseph and Infanta Isabella of Parma, naturally, took place in Vienna. One of Van Meytens's paintings captures the entry into the city of a ceremonial procession of 90 carriages. However, in those years Vienna had no square broad enough to hold all the guests' carriages, so the artists constructed a virtual square, simply removing a multitude of houses from the canvas and pretending that the carriages had assembled not in the narrow little streets of the old town but in an open, well-surveyed space. As is customary, the procession moved along embellished and decorated thoroughfares, passing through specially erected plaster compositions and arches with sculptures glorifying the Habsburgs.
