The Annunciation is the earliest good news in European culture, a message that came true in the flesh. This week, five exhibitions on a promise and its fate: an image made flesh, sketches for a church that was never built, a colossus shown through the most fragile of materials, and a whole district drawn up and never raised. From Renaissance madonnas to a painter who was granted a major museum spread in his lifetime rather than retrospectively.

🤱[“Madonnas of the Renaissance. From Private Collections”](https://pushkinmuseum.art/events/archive/2026/exhibitions/madonni%5Frenessansa.%5Fiz%5Fchastnih%5Fsobraniy/index.php?lang=ru&ref=theparnassian.com) at the Pushkin State Museum of Fine Arts, Main Building, from 1 June 2026\. The first exhibition of a new series: Renaissance images of the Mother of God, gathered from private collections.

Ivanov gave his last years to watercolour sketches for the murals of a building that was never built: he finished “The Appearance of Christ to the People”, but not the temple of his designs. Closes on 21 June.

💎[“Vera Mukhina: Dialogues, Facets”](https://damuseum.ru/exhibitions/vera-mukhina-dialogi-grani/?ref=theparnassian.com) at the All-Russian Museum of Decorative Art on Delegatskaya Street, 3 June - 27 September 2026\. The author of “Worker and Kolkhoz Woman” is shown from an unexpected side, as an innovator in art glass, in dialogue with the Art Deco of Lalique and Sabino and with allusions to Antiquity and the Renaissance, absorbed long ago under Bourdelle.

📐[“Unrealised Projects of the 20th Century. From Sretenka to Prospekt Mira”](https://mosmuseum.ru/exhibitions/p/sretenka-prospekt-mira/?ref=theparnassian.com) at the Garden Ring Museum, 6 June - 5 October 2026\. The Meshchanskaya Sloboda Museum shows what was devised for these streets and never built: projects of the 20th century beside present-day photographs, a vivid demonstration of the difference between an idea and what rose in its place. A whole district that exists only on paper, and the streets that fell to us instead.

🎨[“Viktor Kalinin. In the Space of Life”](https://www.tretyakovgallery.ru/exhibitions/o/viktor-kalinin-v-prostranstve-zhizni/?ref=theparnassian.com) at the New Tretyakov, 13 June - 8 August 2026\. A retrospective of the painter and academician, opening on Saturday. A rare case in which a master is given a major museum spread in his lifetime rather than after the fact.
