Without exaggeration, Netflix's adaptation of Márquez's "One Hundred Years of Solitude" is a masterpiece. I cannot say which of their projects could rival it for beauty.

Flawlessly beautiful and unhurried, it neither wrecks the harmony nor interrupts the flow of the text. I did not even expect that in an age of disposable streaming shows anyone would be able to carry off so complex an undertaking.

It is a most agreeable way to return to a great text and even to look at it anew. Of course, "One Hundred Years of Solitude" is a richly spectacular, emotional and painterly novel, and of course each reader saw his own film while reading it, imagining in his own way the epic house of the Buendías, the fantastical landscape, the magic of Melquíades and that strange, saturated state of the air. But the interpretation of the series' makers did not trouble me in the least; on the contrary, it made me rethink certain moments I had forgotten or overlooked.

Adaptations matter not only for popularising texts but for creating one more opportunity for dialogue with a text and for engaging with it again. There is no need to fixate on departures from the author's letter. Certain inaccuracies and omissions have of course crept into the adaptation, which is unavoidable, but the Márquezian spirit asserts itself and sets everything in its place.

Yet were I asked, then beyond doubt: first we read, then we watch. Though I am certain that for those who have not read the book, there will be no choice left after viewing, and Márquez will surely take an important place on their bookshelf.
