The banker's wife Sophie Couteux du Molay with her children, a miniature of 1787 by Jacques-Antoine Lemoine called The Balcony. It is in the collection of the Louvre. I am very fond of the slanting, carelessly fixed blinds, and of the boy holding the cord in his hand with such a serious air. The fabulously rich Couteux du Molay family descends on both sides from the financiers of Rouen: the husband was a partner in a major bank, an industrialist and the administrator of the Royal Lottery. In the 1770s the couple acquired and laid out Malmaison, making it one of the centres of society in France and a place of pilgrimage, which twenty years later would be bought by Joséphine de Beauharnais.
