# Map of Britain in a 1961 Soviet book and the wrong placement of Nottinghamshire

The authors of a curious little book, "Atomic Energy in Aviation and Rocket Technology" (1961), seem to be asking us: what, exactly, matters most in a map? Fidelity of scale, beauty of line, the number of dragons and sea monsters in the margins, the power to frighten, or, how shall we put it... accuracy? The dreadful black amoeba that has engulfed the vast expanses of Albion, though it cites for the sake of persuasiveness an English book, "Nuclear Weapons", that never existed, has a certain smell about it, do you know what? By no means that of ozone produced by the ionisation of oxygen molecules in the air. It is the classic smell of disinformation, straight out of the cookery manual of Elena Molokhovets. To judge by the illustration, many Englishmen had nothing to fear, the inhabitants of Nottinghamshire at any rate, which the Soviet cartographer has for some reason placed far to the south of its actual location
