The Anglo-Irish suffragist Charlotte Despard in Trafalgar Square in 1910 and in 1933\. Across a gap of 23 years the woman lost none of her grip, her will to protest or her power to inspire a crowd. First she, a writer, pacifist, tax resister, philanthropist, socialist and vegetarian, stood for women's suffrage; when the times threw down a new challenge, she became a fierce anti-fascist, and at 89 she spoke from the same platform, warning of the dangers of fascism: in the same pose, with the same temperament. She founded the Women's Freedom League, a clinic, a working club for young people and men, and a kitchen for the poor. For many years Charlotte supported the parties campaigning for Irish independence, although her brother was Lord Lieutenant of Ireland.
