A historic event took place in Great Britain today: for the first time in the 1,400-year history of the Anglican Church, a woman has been appointed Archbishop of Canterbury: Sarah Mullally. Her candidacy was approved by King Charles III, and Prime Minister Keir Starmer officially announced the decision.

Mallally becomes the 106th Archbishop of Canterbury, succeeding Justin Welby, who left the post amid a scandal over accusations of inaction in cases of sexual abuse. The Church of England began ordaining women to the priesthood as early as 1994, and formally adopted the law on women bishops in 2014\. The first woman bishop in the Church of England was the Oxford graduate Libby Lane. Mullally is the third woman to head the episcopate.

Interestingly, almost simultaneously another landmark event took place in England: a woman has become head of British intelligence, MI6, for the first time: Blaise Metreweli, of Ukrainian-Georgian roots, “the youngest specialist in the history of the agency”.
