Tippi, whose full name is Natalie, is the mother of the actress Melanie Griffith and the grandmother of Dakota Johnson. In 1969, with her second husband, Noel Marshall, she made the film Roar, which became one of the most dangerous productions in the history of cinema. In the plot, the family of a naturalist who lives on an African wildlife reserve among wild animals comes to visit him. The little Melanie also took part in the filming. During the shoot she was badly mauled by one of the supposedly tame lions, so badly that she nearly lost an eye and had to undergo a number of complicated surgical operations.

In her more mature years Tippi admitted that keeping wild animals at home had been sheer folly
