# Alexandre Dumas in a Circassian coat during his three-month stay in the Caucasus

Alexandre Dumas in a Circassian coat during his three-month stay in the Caucasus. Dumas père travelled through Russia in 1858 to 1859, having come at the invitation of the patron of the arts Count Kushelev-Bezborodko, who is called the prototype of the Count of Monte Cristo, and, for that matter, of Prince Myshkin too.

In April 1859 Dumas published a three-volume collection of stories about the Caucasus. The whole journey through Russia is described in the seven-volume work “Impressions of a Journey to Russia”. He visited Saint Petersburg, Moscow, Kalyazin, Nizhny Novgorod, Kazan, Saratov, Tsaritsyn and Astrakhan, and afterwards the Caucasus: Kizlyar, Derbent, Baku and Tiflis.

Dumas would have come to Russia sooner, but 18 years earlier, immediately after the publication of the novel “The Fencing Master”, Emperor Nicholas I had declared him persona non grata
