# Shorn Samson on Delilah's lap in Albrecht Altdorfer's work of the early 16th century

Note that the severed hair is only hinted at.

Early sixteenth century.

We see the legendary Samson still asleep or already drained of strength. Without the hair in which his might lay hidden, he cannot even get up, and so his head has remained in the lap of the Philistine priestess Delilah. Any moment now the Philistines will appear and take the trusting hero captive
