And from our window the Place du Louvre is in view. A view of the colonnade of the east façade of the Louvre, a true masterpiece of French classicism.

But we do not peep out of every secret little window of the royal palaces for nothing. Another name for this part of the Louvre is the Colonnade of Claude Perrault. The architect, engineer and mechanic Perrault worked on it in 1667-1673\. In time Perrault's colonnade would become so significant a structure that its influence can be traced in many buildings of later centuries, beginning with the Metropolitan Museum.

Claude Perrault was none other than one of the three elder brothers of the fairy-tale writer Charles Perrault. The Perrault brothers, who distinguished themselves in the sciences, the arts and the public service, were born into the family of a prosperous Parisian lawyer from a well-to-do merchant line. And if it was the youngest brother, the writer, who brought the Perrault name its truly worldwide fame, it was Claude's talents, as a universally gifted natural philosopher and scholar in fields from biology and medicine to physics and architecture, that won the greatest recognition in his own lifetime.
