Shall we go to a museum? One of the oldest museum collections in Russia, dating from the time of Peter the Great, is, incidentally, the collection of minerals, which in 1716 became the core of the Mineral Cabinet of the Kunstkamera and in 1836 was formally transformed into a separate Mineralogical Museum under the Academy of Sciences. The museum moved to Moscow in 1934 and has stood ever since a stone's throw from Leninsky Prospect and the Neskuchny Garden, in the riding hall of Count Orlov; since 1956 it has borne the name of the eminent scholar, collector and museum man, Academician Alexander Fersman. It turns out that the museum is now more than 300 years old. Besides the remarkable stones, minerals, meteorites and assorted handiwork, the building itself makes an impression, the hall itself, comparable to the most striking museum venues in the world: just look at the Empire-style display cases and the gold of the stucco and chandeliers! Admission is charged, 400 roubles, and you will be asked to pay extra separately for photography; open Wednesday to Sunday, 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. A beautiful place in the centre of Moscow, not yet cheapened.
