99 years ago today, the first radio signal was transmitted from Engineer Shukhov's tower. The first broadcast of the Comintern Television Tower was a concert of Russian music featuring Nadezhda Obukhova and Boris Evlakhov. As you pass this tower on Shabolovka, know that its engineering solution, devised and realised by Vladimir Shukhov, was a genuine discovery and is still used throughout the world, including on warships and in the construction of masts and skyscrapers, for example Moscow City. The new telescopic method made it possible to erect the tower without scaffolding: the upper sections were simply "pushed out" of the previous ones. Shukhov's openwork hyperboloid structure is three times lighter than that of the Eiffel Tower per metre of height. The monument to Shukhov on Sretensky Boulevard, by the Lukoil building, contains depictions of elements of the tower.
