On 9 June 1994 the British channel ITV broadcast a documentary by the journalist Jonathan Dimbleby in which Prince Charles, now King Charles III, admitted to adultery. By then Charles and Diana had already been living apart for a year and a half. That same evening Princess Diana arrived at a Vanity Fair reception at the Serpentine Gallery in London, wearing a close-fitting black off-the-shoulder cocktail dress by the Greek designer Christina Stambolian. Diana had chosen it at the last moment. According to the fashion editor Anna Harvey, who helped the princess with her wardrobe, Diana wanted to look like a million dollars. The press dubbed the outfit the "revenge dress".

In June 1997 Diana put the dress up for auction at Christie's in New York, together with 78 other items from her wardrobe. The proceeds went to charities that helped people with cancer and AIDS. Two months after that auction Diana died in a car crash in Paris.

The dress will go under the hammer once more, this time at Sotheby's, on 9 December 2026 in New York, for the first time since 1997\. Experts estimate it at between 150 and 300 thousand dollars. Before the sale Sotheby's will show the dress in London from 18 to 24 September, then in Hong Kong and Geneva, and from 2 December in New York. Part of the proceeds will go to the charity NHS Lothian Charity, which supports the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh.
