On 16 October the International Numismatic Club's [Museum](https://www.coinmuseum.ru/?ref=theparnassian.com) will open the exhibition "Byzantine Symphony. Treasures Earthly and Heavenly". The history and art of ancient Byzantium will be told through an integral part of the artistic culture of the Middle Ages: coins. A most significant event in the context of Russian culture, the chief heir to Byzantine visual art.

The exhibition will present more than 500 items: a unique collection of Byzantine coins, objects of decorative art, miniature carving in stone, artistic metalwork, painting, architectural details and archaeological finds.

Once Christianity had been recognised as the official, and then the sole, religion of the Roman Empire, Byzantine coins came to serve not only economic functions but also to spread Christian images and symbols. Gold Byzantine coins were the visible embodiment of the Byzantine principle of power: the harmony of the secular and the religious. Works of art, coins among them, will reveal the meanings that underlie Byzantine culture.

The largest state museums are taking part in the project: the Hermitage, the Pushkin State Museum of Fine Arts, the State Historical Museum, the Russian Museum, the Tretyakov Gallery, the Novgorod State Museum-Reserve, the Museum of Christian Culture, and the finest private collections.
