On 14 May 1896, Nicholas II was crowned. He was to be allotted 22 years and 3 months on the throne of Russia.

The sacrament of the holy coronation took place in the Dormition Cathedral of the Moscow Kremlin and lasted five hours.

From the Dormition Cathedral the imperial couple proceeded across Red Square to the ancient Palace of Facets, where a table had been laid for the ceremonial dinner on a dais beneath a brocade canopy. The Tsar and Tsarina dined apart from the guests. They were observed throughout by the flower of the Russian nobility.
