On 10 March 1933, a show burning of books of "un-German spirit" took place in the 21 largest cities of Germany. From March onwards, theses calling for the "purification" of culture and language and the exaltation of German nationalism were circulated among the universities. Students were invited to take part in compiling lists of harmful literature, which first and foremost included Jewish authors, as well as dissidents, opponents of the regime, critics of National Socialist ideology and other writers out of favour with the authorities. Activists were to find, in their own homes, in the homes of their acquaintances and in public libraries, the books on the list, which were then consigned to the flames. Propaganda defined the motive of this "Action against the Un-German Spirit" as a "response to the worldwide Jewish smear campaign against Germany", and set as its aim the defence of traditional German values
